This is probably the biggest buzz word (or words) around the industry at the moment. It’s a very simplified look at nutrition and fat loss however maybe this is what the industry needs.
So what is a calorie? They’re in food right? We see how many are in our food on packaging, we know too many are bad, but what are they?
A calorie is a unit of energy and the calorie as we hear of it is the unit of measurement from energy through food, 1 GRAM of FAT is 9 calories, PROTEIN is 4 calories and Carbohydrates are 4 calories. We also have ALCOHOL which also contains calories and 1 gram contains 7 calories.
So we can quickly see that FAT is over double the calories of CARBS + PROTEIN.
SO WHAT IS A CALORIE DEFICIT??
This is where your total consumed calories is less than your daily energy output. So if you eat 1500 calories but burn 2000 then you have a calorie deficit of 500 calories. It takes 3500 calories to gain a pound of FAT and you need to burn the same to lose it. While this wont happen daily this is a good standard for the week as a whole. If you accumulate persistent caloric deficits day after day, you will lose fat. This is not a theory. It’s a law of physics.
EAT LESS THAN YOU USE AND YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT. EAT MORE THAN YOU USE AND YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT.
Sounds simple and it is, so why does the industry make it seem so difficult or confusing??? Well MONEY is a big part of it, people want to make it and can easily exploit people looking for quick results. The other reason is that people are always looking for QUICK RESULTS. If you have accumulated fat over a period of time, it’s going to take a period of time to lose it. Consistency is key and you need to be persistent for FAT LOSS TO HAPPEN.
People don’t want to hear that Simple will provide results whether it be training or nutrition. We want easy fixes and we want to SPEND money on it, otherwise where is the value??
SO WHEN IT COMES TO FAT LOSS, EAT LESS THAN YOU BURN or BURN MORE THAN YOU EAT.
it doesn’t need to be much more complicated than this, you can make it so if you wish but where has that got you so far???
